Ever Hear a Baby Cry Hearself Hoarse? November 22, 2007

Despite the title of this post, things are actually going well today. Our midwife Tracy gave us some excellent feeding help yesterday, and we’re starting to feel better about that whole aspect of it, which is, as you can imagine, a huge relief.
So what’s with the crying, you ask? Well, our house decided to take revenge on us after all the things we’ve done to it this year. Couldn’t have picked a better time. At 4:30 this morning, as we were just about to feed her, the power went out on the whole block! Now normally this wouldn’t be a problem, especially for those lucky people in all the OTHER houses who were actually sleeping. But for some reason, there was a remnant of an old alarm system buried somewhere in our attic, and this power outage (but not any of the other ones we’ve had in the past 3 years) set it off. At 4:30 in the morning.
Our first instinct was that it was the car alarm for some reason, but neither of us knew how to turn it off. But when Johnny rushed outside to check, he said it was coming from the roof of the house. I put the baby down on her sheepskin on the ottoman, but even though she was safe, it must have been very surprising, and VERY cold!
Ultimately, Johnny dug through old insulation in the attic in the dark in his housecoat and got the alarm off, but not before it went off for 20 minutes and probably woke up everyone on our street. (Eep. Sorry, neighbours.) The only person who was probably more pissed off at us than the neighbours was the poor baby.
Fortunately, she is very forgiving, especially if you feed her.
